Irem Sonmez MD, M.Sc

Irem graduated medical school from Istanbul University, and is currently completing her residency in psychiatry at the University of Minnesota. Irem takes a variety of leadership roles in the psychiatry resident program. In collaboration with others, she designed and organized the renovation of the resident space to enhance collaborations and community amongst the program. Irem also has a keen interest in creating opportunities for others to succeed and is the resident wellness lead coordinator. 

Prior to starting her residency at the University of Minnesota, Irem was a research collaborator in the Neuromodulation Laboratory at Mayo Clinic and also completed a Postdoctoral Masters in Clinical and Translational Sciences. 

Irem has received numerous awards including: MGH Psychiatry Academy’s Spotlight on Advanced Topics in Women’s Mental Health Scholarship, American Psychiatric Association, Research Colloquium Awardee, European Psychiatric Association, Travel Grant Awardee for European Congress of Psychiatry, Minnesota Psychiatric Society Eric Brown Resident Caucus Scholarship. 

When not busy with residency or research Irem enjoys paddle boarding on the lakes in the Twin Cities, playing volleyball, and watching reruns of Frasier.
